On the 2nd of August 2007, two Russian submersibles were sent to the bottom of the Arctic Ocean to plant the national flag on the seabed to reinforce the country’s blanket claim over the oil rich territory, prompting controversy and international court involvement.
Four years later, as a leading British/American petroleum group does a deal with Russia over exploration in an undisputed area of the Arctic, a three strong hit team led by a man known as The Icelander – hired by a shadowy Russian agency opposed to foreign interference – is by chance intercepted in the heart of the Italian city of Venice. They are on the way to carry out the assassination of two Norwegian government ministers covertly working to upstage Russia’s plans to claim the Arctic.
On the hit team is a former IRA bomb maker, who has taken on the assignment to raise funds for dissident Republican groups back in Ireland, prompting security officials to call on the services of a retired British Army bomb disposal expert who is familiar with the IRA man’s work.
The third member is an Indian Muslim, with an ulterior motive: the assassination of the Pakistani President who is attending a Climate Change conference in Venice.
As the gang is forced to lay siege to Venice’s Doge Palace, a woman boards a flight from Dublin to Venice with the intention of killing the pilot who abused her as a little girl; she has already murdered her abusive family GP in Dublin.
On the same flight is a young female journalist on her first foreign assignment to find out more about the IRA man’s involvement. She becomes caught up in a terrifying struggle between those who want to open up the Arctic Ocean to wholesale exploration, and those who would want to preserve the natural tranquillity of the Arctic Circle and prevent it becoming the world’s next giant oil field.
